The GuardianCarabao Cup first round: West Ham, Burnley and more feature in Saturday’s live action
The Carabao Cup first round continues on Saturday with a string of 3pm BST kick-offs, and The Guardian is providing live updates from the day’s action. Among the ties being followed are West Ham United against Portsmouth and Burnley versus Notts County, with the Premier League sides beginning their League Cup campaigns.
In the only 2pm kick-off, Queens Park Rangers and Millwall are locked at 0-0 at Loftus Road. According to The Guardian’s live blog, Rangers have seen most of the ball, while Millwall have managed only an off-target first shot at goal. There is little else to report from that encounter so far.
The blog also finds time for a light-hearted reaction to the early return of domestic football. A reader identified as Kári Tulinius asks: “How is there football already? Doesn’t it ever stop? Someone should campaign to stop football.” The Guardian responds with a nod to its own off-season break, noting that stopping football would probably first require a campaign to restart The Fiver – and nobody is agitating for that.
Readers can follow the live scoreboard for updates and find related match highlights on this site as the afternoon progresses.
