The GuardianBochum bans coordinated jumping after fans report nausea
The German club announced that fans will no longer be allowed to jump up and down together in a section of the Ruhrstadion, citing concerns that the synchronized movement can make some spectators feel unwell. The decision follows an engineering review carried out as part of a broader stadium‑upgrade programme.
The engineers confirmed that the stand’s load‑bearing capacity meets all safety standards, but their report highlighted a “trampoline effect” that occurs when large groups jump at the same time. The rhythmic up‑and‑down motion can create a resonant vibration that, while structurally harmless, may trigger nausea or dizziness in spectators who are not accustomed to it.
VfL Bochum expressed regret that the measure was unavoidable, emphasizing that the club’s priority is the health and comfort of its supporters. The ban applies only to coordinated jumping; regular cheering and chanting remain permitted. According to The Guardian, the club hopes the restriction will be reassessed once further studies are completed.
Supporters can still enjoy the match atmosphere, and the club encourages fans to watch the live highlights that will be posted on the site after the game.
