The GuardianLankshear's debut volley guides Middlesbrough past Wrexham
Will Lankshear scored a stunning first-time volley on his Middlesbrough debut to give his side a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in the Carabao Cup first round. The £10m summer signing from Tottenham struck in the 61st minute to settle the tie, a result that sees Boro advance to the second round.
The Guardian reports that Lankshear's goal was a superb hooked finish from close range. Earlier, Middlesbrough had almost taken the lead in the seventh minute when Adilson Malanda turned Sebastian Berhalter's cross goalwards, but Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward produced an excellent point-blank save to keep the scores level.
The win means Middlesbrough have gone one better than last year's campaign, when they failed to progress as far. With the opening match of the new season ending in success, Boro will look to build on the momentum when the next round gets underway.
