Skinner leaves United with tight budget and a young squad to build on

Marc Skinner has decided not to continue as Manchester United Women's head coach, according to The Guardian, bringing an end to a tenure that divided opinion while operating with a limited budget.

Skinner's last significant European night came in April, when United were knocked out of the Women's Champions League by Bayern Munich. After that defeat he said the club had to look seriously at what it wanted to achieve, adding: 'It takes, sometimes, a punch in the face to wake up.'

According to the report, the bruise from that night has healed but any renewed ambition in the transfer market has not materialised. Skinner has chosen not to go again, and the club must now find a successor who can work with the academy players and young talent already available rather than expecting major investment.

The Guardian's Tom Garry notes that Skinner may have been a 'Marmite' manager during his time at United, but he made the most of what was available. The next person in the job faces the same challenge, only with perhaps even less room to manoeuvre.
