The Knowledge: Fagan-Walcott's leap from National League to Champions League qualifying

The Guardian's Knowledge column is asking readers to help answer a question about the biggest leap in competitive levels between consecutive club games. Tom Reed points to Malachi Fagan-Walcott: his final match of last season was for York City against Rochdale in the National League, and his first competitive game of the 2026-27 campaign was for Hearts against Sturm Graz in a Champions League qualifier.

The column wonders whether that can be beaten. One nomination comes from Russell Connor, who recalls Gary Plumley. Plumley made nearly 200 appearances for Newport County across four spells, but by 1987 he had effectively retired and was running a wine bar, only playing occasionally for Ebbw Vale in the Welsh League. His next notable game was an FA Cup semi-final — described as a 'cracking yarn' even if the level gap may not be bigger.

The same Knowledge column also touches on referees with notable playing backgrounds, including Steve Baines, Dick Jol and Ben Haverkort, as well as other reader questions about penalty shoot-outs and footballers donating antiques.
