The GuardianWalker says City’s trophies belong to players despite financial verdict
An independent commission has ruled that Manchester City breached Premier League financial regulations between the 2009‑10 and 2017‑18 seasons, boosting the club’s reported income by more than £900 million. The club has lodged an appeal against the judgment, which was described by The Guardian as “seismic”.
Speaking on TalkSport, the current Burnley captain – who spent eight seasons at City from 2017 to 2025 – said the verdict “doesn’t look great”. Walker, who lifted the Champions League trophy and 12 major domestic honours during his spell, added that commenting on the legal process while the appeal is ongoing would “not do myself justice or anyone involved in it”.
Walker stressed that the memories of the club’s success will remain with the players who earned them, regardless of the outcome of the appeal. Readers can find related match highlights on this site while the case proceeds.
