Andy Burnham responds after Premier League clubs left ‘astonished’ by Man City comments

The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has issued a new statement after receiving criticism for his first response to the Premier League’s announcement that Manchester City had been found guilty of breaching financial rules over a nine‑year period.

According to Mirror Football, clubs across the Premier League expressed “astonishment” at comments made by Manchester City in the wake of the ruling, prompting further debate about the club’s compliance and the league’s disciplinary process.

Burnham said his earlier remarks were intended to highlight the importance of transparency and fairness, but he acknowledged the backlash and promised to engage with the league and clubs to ensure the issue is dealt with constructively.

He added that any future actions will be guided by the need to protect the integrity of the competition while also supporting the broader interests of football in the region.
