‘Those memories are ours and no verdict changes that’: Manchester City fans’ views

Supporters of Manchester City are grappling with the fallout from the club’s recent financial‑fair‑play case, and the reactions are far from uniform. Long‑time fan Nicola Schofield, who has followed the team for more than four decades, worries that the owners’ strategy could create a lasting divide. “Everyone wants to get behind the club and the team,” she told The Guardian, “but this is different to the experience of a relegation of the type I experienced in the 90s. We all shared that, and we stood by the club down to League One and as we came back up.”

Schofield fears a split between those who might want the owners out and those who will continue to back them, adding that any rift could be hard to heal. “I think ultimately all fans want to ensure our club still exists, but I do worry at divisions this could cause and that might be hard to heal,” she said.

Ben, a season‑ticket holder, admitted he is still processing the news. “I trusted the club completely and believed every word they said in response to the charges, so this has hit hard,” he explained. He also reiterated his belief that the FFP rules have never been fair, acknowledging that this view may not be popular among other fans.

Despite the controversy, Ben stressed that the last 15 years of success remain untouchable. “We lived every moment: Aguero in 2012, the centurions, the treble, Istanbul. Those memories are ours and no verdict changes that,” he said, adding that he will continue to support the team.

The mixed sentiments highlight a tension between loyalty to recent achievements and concerns over the club’s governance. Readers can find related match highlights on this site.
