The GuardianTuchel’s England squad: Winners and losers as injuries reshape the train
Thomas Tuchel’s initial plan for the new international cycle was simple – keep the core that took England to the World Cup semi‑finals and build on that continuity. As the four‑match Nations League window approached, the German‑born manager expected only minor adjustments to the squad that had travelled to North America last summer.
That vision was quickly undermined by a series of injuries. By the time Tuchel announced his September group, several World Cup regulars were already ruled out, and further withdrawals left him with just 12 players who had featured in the tournament. The Czechia match at Wembley on Tuesday highlighted how thin the selection pool had become.
Among the few who have benefited are the young forwards Alex Scott, Lewis Hall and Myles Lewis‑Skelly. Their recent form earned them regular call‑ups and they now appear poised to become regulars in Tuchel’s plans, while more established names risk being left on the bench or omitted entirely.
According to The Guardian, the situation underscores the speed at which a football “train” moves – it stops for no one. Tuchel will have to balance the need for fresh talent with the desire for squad stability as England looks ahead to the next phase of the Nations League and beyond.
