The GuardianTransfer news: Welbeck joins Chelsea, Brentford complete record Sangaré deal
Chelsea have signed Brighton striker Danny Welbeck for a reported £5m, according to The Guardian. The 35-year-old has agreed a two-year contract and will link up with Xabi Alonso’s squad on their pre-season tour.
The move marks a departure from Chelsea’s recent policy of recruiting younger players. It is the first time they have paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived from Barcelona in 2022, when the striker was 33.
Brentford have also completed a deal for Mali international Sangaré, reported at £39m. The Guardian reports the transfer is a club-record fee for the Bees as they bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
