Football letters: ‘I love football, so I support lots of clubs’

According to The Guardian, a letters page response to Luke McLaughlin’s article about football fans switching allegiance has drawn a thoughtful reply from reader Michael Opitz. He writes that he read the piece with a great deal of empathy, while still feeling some uneasiness about the taboo of supporting more than one club.

Opitz describes a world he knows well. He was at the Millwall v Nottingham Forest game marred by crowd trouble, which was his first. His family are mostly Millwall supporters, and Millwall remain his club, but after seeing them drop down the divisions and play in the third tier, his head was turned by better technique and by friends who support Tottenham and Arsenal. He says those friends will never understand his soft spot for both clubs.
