The GuardianArsenal step up search for defensive cover as Saliba and Timber remain sidelined
Arsenal have stepped up efforts to add defensive reinforcement with William Saliba facing an extended lay-off and Jurriën Timber still far from a return, according to The Guardian.
The Premier League club are expected to make a fresh bid for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as they look to ease the strain on their back line. Saliba suffered a back injury during the World Cup, while Timber has not yet resumed competitive action.
Speaking after Arsenal's 3-2 friendly defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, Arteta would not specify when Saliba might be back, saying the injury would take "some time to heal." He also made clear that the club's existing players need to improve following a performance that featured several defensive mistakes.
The loss was Arsenal's second successive friendly defeat and highlighted the need for cover, with Arteta acknowledging the situation within his current squad.
