The GuardianArgentina to mark World Cup semi-final win over England with national day
Argentina’s football association has established a ‘National Football Teams Day’ to commemorate the national team’s World Cup semi-final win over England last month, according to The Guardian.
The Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) approved the measure at a meeting of its executive board on Wednesday. The date chosen is 15 July, the day of the 2-1 victory in Atlanta.
The decision comes after post-match celebrations featured a banner referencing the Falklands Islands. The banner was displayed during the celebrations that followed the match.
The newly created day is intended to honour Argentina’s national football teams and will be observed annually on that date. Related match highlights can be found on this site.
